b.Some unique bridges

1.Tower Bridge (England)

Built in 1894 by Wolfe Barry and Horace Jones. Tower Bridge is one of the famous land marks in London and one of the most beautiful in the world. This 800 foot long bridge has a space 28 feet when closed but opens in the center until it reaches 140 feet which allows ships to sail. Tower Bridge using the 432 workers and built in eight years. At that time they sank 70,000 tons of concrete into the two large piers, placing two supporting structure into place, each of them weighs 1000 tons and decorate the whole bridge with Portland stone and Cornish granite to cover 11000 tons of steel.

2.Ponte Vecchio (Italy)

Ponte Vecchio in Florence is one of the famous tourist attractions in Italy, and considered as the oldest stone arch bridge in Europe. Actually this bridge is built of wood until it was destroyed by floods in 1333, and 12 years later, the bridge was rebuilt using stone. Famous for its shops on the bridge. The bridge is full of shops, starting from the traders and butchers of the Middle Ages until the gift shop and art sellers.

3.Gateshead Millennium Bridge(England)

The bridge takes as little as 4.5 minutes to rotate through the full 40° from closed to open, depending on wind speed. Its appearance during this manoeuvre has led to it being nicknamed the "Blinking Eye Bridge".

4.The rolling bridge(England)

The bridge consists of eight triangular sections hinged at the walkway level and connected above by two-part links that can be collapsed towards the deck by hydraulic cylinders, which are concealed in vertical posts in the bridge parapets. When extended, it resembles a conventional steel and timber footbridge, and is 12 metres long. To allow the passage of boats, the hydraulic pistons are activated and the bridge curls up until its two ends join, to form an octagonal shape measuring one half of the waterway's width at that point.

EXP3 Week1

a.Mash up

Article 25 believes that buildings, whether ostentatiously or quietly inspiring, play a keyrole in changing and improving lives. While economic and environmental issuespreviously prevented sites like the 168-acre Carson site from redevelopment, as Article25 Trustee Lord Norman Foster affirms: “As a designer I have always been driven by abelief that the quality of our surroundings directly influences the quality of our lives. Thedriver for an engineering approach to materials design is meeting a specific need formaterials performance in the context of a system. Environmental technology andconstruction methods can rehabilitate properties once thought unusable, whether in theworkplace, at home or in the public spaces that make up our cities. Such a perspectivenecessitates the focus of the design activity on the wider context of the application. These properties are typically called Brownfields sites and there are hundreds that havebeen safely rehabilitated for public and private use. Architecture is a social art – anecessity and not a luxury. It is generated by the needs of people, both spiritual andphysical. Combinations of properties must be considered within specified process, cost, environmental and life cycle constraints.

EXP2 Week3(FINAL SUBMISSION)

a. On- the spot Investigation

Site1: Water Tank

Site 2: Phone Tower

Site 3: Soccer Field(SELECTED)

Unlike the other two sites which are smaller and locate in the deep of  the main park, the soccer field is seperated from the main park and has a large empty lawn beside, making it a ideal site for my marker as I want my marker to serve as a little courtyard. People can gather easily there. In addition, the terrain of this site is higher, which enables visitors from all directions to catch sight of  the marker from a distance without being blocked by the lucus.

b. 36 Textures

Line1: Chequer
Line2: Natural
Line3: Stripe & Austerity
Line4: Leisurely
Line5: Circle
Line6: Stony

c. Scenes From Lumion

The marker is surrounded by various flowers, making the space full of vigour.

People can rest on the bench.

Visitors can enjoy leisure time in this little courtyard. Eg. Children can dabble or fly a kite. The old can take a walk .

The marker looks peaceful at night with the gentle lighting.

The marker can be easily seen from a distance.

Texture1: The pattern is inspired by SANAA's works(chequer), the broken texture and the new colour are suitable for this portion.
Texture2: The pattern is inspired by the word, stoney, representing the themes of 'nature' and 'aboriginal culture'.
Texture3: The pattern is inspired by SANAA's works( Stripe & Austerity). People can easily recognize the rest place by applying this texture on the bench.

d. Design Concepts(SANAA) & Themes

Concept of Block1(The stone-like part): Simple geometry with some parts hollowed out

Concept of Block2(The white part): Whiteness, Austerity, Integration(with environment)

Whiteness

Integration

Austerity

Two portions with different concepts inlay with each other to form the marker, which is a combination of tradition and modernization.

The themes of this marker can be summarized by three words: nature, culture and family.

Far from downtown Sydney, Blacktown International Sportspark locates in a small town called Rooty Hills with pleasant natural environment around. The pond and the ornamental vegetation on the marker express the theme of "NATURE".

Blacktown has a splendid aboriginal civilization. The two stone-like figures represent the theme of "CULTURE".

Aboriginal

The park serves as not only a sports venue, but a ideal place for family gathering. The whole marker is designed into a little courtyard, which expresses the theme of "FAMILY" and well brings three themes together as well. Using the marker as the core, there can be a garden on this empty space in the future. People can watch the soccer matches and spend a leisure time at the same time.
